Amazon Prime Day 2020: The Best, Worst, and Somewhere-In-Between Kitchen Deals

The Best Deals of the Day
We've tested these products and were impressed by their performances. They're worth the money, with or without the sale.

Our longime winner consistently turns in gold medal performances. “Every slice is perfect,” said one tester in our last review. It's comfortable and sharp, with a long, tall blade that is “just flexible enough so you feel like it’s doing what you tell it to.” [BUY NOW]

AmazonBasics Silicone, Non-Stick, Food Safe Baking Mat (Packs of 2 and 4)
On Sale: 10am EST Tuesday until 10 AM EST Wednesday
Sale Price: $8.11 for the 2 pack, $14.08 for the 4 pack
Prime Day Discount: 42% for the 2 pack, 43% for the 4 pack
You Save: $5.88 on the 2 pack, $10.86 for the 4 pack
These mats fit perfectly in our favorite baking sheet and stayed put nicely, thanks to a relatively heavy weight. They helped foods cook and brown well, and because they're dishwasher-safe, they retained fewer odors and became less greasy over time than non-dishwasher-safe models we tested.

Design Trifecta 360 Knife Block *
On Sale: Tuesday and Wednesday
Sale Price: $299.00 $249.00 (Apply Amazon coupon to save)
Discount: 13%
You Save: $40.00
This handsome block certainly lives up to its billing as “the last knife block you ever have to buy.” The heaviest model we tested, this block was ultrastable, and its durable bamboo exterior was a breeze to clean. Well-placed medium-strength magnets made it easy to attach all our knives, and a rotating base gave us quick access to them. [BUY NOW]
* This deal isn't actually part of Prime Day. It just happens to be a great deal going on at the same time!
Vitamix 5200 Blender

Discount: 52%
You Save: $290.00
For those who want an intuitive, quiet blender that can pulverize anything with the turn of a dial and will likely outlast its 7-year warranty, this has been our top recommended model for years. [BUY NOW]
Deals Worth Considering
These are some products we reviewed and liked but might not have loved. Here's what we said about them so you can make a more informed purchasing decision.
AmazonBasics Enameled Cast Iron Covered Dutch Oven, 7.3-Quart
On Sale: 10AM EST Tuesday until 10AM EST Wednesday
Sale Price: $61.99 $43.39
Prime Day Discount: 30%
You Save: $18.60
This large, handsome pot performed well overall but doesn’t handle quite as easily or sear quite as efficiently as our winning pots, from Cuisinart ($83.46) and Le Creuset ($379.95). It also can’t go into an oven hotter than 400 degrees, so you can’t bake bread in it, and we had some concerns about the enamel chipping. [BUY NOW]
AmazonBasics Electric Glass and Steel Kettle, 1.7 Liter
On Sale: 10AM EST Tuesday until 10AM EST Wednesday
Sale Price: $28.15 $19.70
Prime Day Discount: 27%
You Save: $8.45
It’s an attractive kettle and it works quickly, but it isn’t quite as user-friendly as our two favorite models, from OXO ($79.99) and Capresso ($60.19). The spout is large and water poured from it in a wide stream, even when it was almost empty and we were very careful. That made it hard to use for pour-over coffee and other precise tasks. The lid also bounced back and forth when we opened it, sending droplets of hot water flying. [BUY NOW]
USA Pan Bakeware Rectangular Cake Pan, 9 x 13 inch
On Sale: All day Tuesday and Wednesday
Sale Price: $24.88 $15.99
Prime Day Discount: 35%
You Save: $8.89
This pan was a strong performer in all of our tests, though its corrugated-looking bottom ridges were controversial: They left marks that some testers found unappealing on baked goods, but the ridges helped minimize scratches. Otherwise, the pan’s nonstick coating released flawlessly. If you don't mind the ridges, this pan is a good buy. Otherwise, our overall favorite is the Williams Sonoma Goldtouch Nonstick Rectangular Cake Pan ($39.95). [BUY NOW]
Victorinox Turner 3" x 6" Chef's Slotted Fish
On Sale: All day Tuesday and Wednesday
Sale Price: $16.33
Prime Day Discount: 46%
This fish spatula had a well-proportioned, nicely curved head of moderate thickness and flexibility, but testers were mixed on its handle: While the textured wood surface helped us keep our grip on the spatula, a rough metal edge stuck out from that wood, digging into our hands. Instead, we recommend our Best Buy, the MIU France Flexible Fish Turner ($21.95), as a better option. [BUY NOW]
2 Deals to Stay Away From (and What to Buy Instead)
We've tested many of the kitchen tools included in Prime Day, and some of the products just aren't worth the money. Here are the products that you're better off skipping, and what we recommend buying instead.
• Prime Day Deal: Victorinox Boston-Style Oyster Knife, 3” Narrow, SuperGrip Handle
• What You Should Buy Instead: R. Murphy New Haven Oyster Knife with Stainless Steel Blade ($26.95)
In our testing of oyster knives, we had reservations about the Victorinox. Its blade was too long and hard to control. “I don’t trust myself with it,” said one tester. If you're in the market for an oyster knife, buy the R. Murphy New Haven Oyster Knife instead. It won our review because it's so well crafted, with a simple, comfortable wooden handle that never budged in our hands. One shucker noted that it “seemed to disappear and become part of your hand.”
• Prime Day Deal: AmazonBasics 5-Cup Coffeemaker with Glass Carafe
• What You Should Buy Instead: Bonavita 8 Cup One-Touch Coffee Maker ($149.99)
When we tested the AmazonBasics 5-Cup Coffeemaker, it failed on all the metrics that make good coffee. Instead, we highly recommend the Bonavita 8 Cup One-Touch Coffee Maker. It brews hot and fast, resulting in a smooth brew that tasters rated the most flavorful out of all the coffee makers we tested. (And don't just take it from us: It's certified by the Specialty Coffee Association home brewer program as meeting all the standards for good coffee.) Its thermal carafe kept brewed coffee hot for more than an hour, and all its parts were accessible and easy to clean.
