It's tough to know what a newly married couple actually needs to equip their kitchen. Here’s a list of knives and other tools that deserve a place on every wedding registry.

As America's Test Kitchen's gadget expert and the executive editor of its Tasting and Testing Team, I've tested thousands of products over the years. I’ve already told you which pots and pans you should gift to newly married couples or put on your wedding registry. This week, I’m here to tell you what pieces of essential kitchen gear—with a focus on sets and kits—deserve a place in any newlywed couple’s first kitchen together.

Before you go shopping, a few words of warning: Resist the temptation to buy a knife set. Our testing has proven that you’ll spend more and get less with a set than buying open stock of the pieces that you really need. Don’t be fooled, and don’t get stuck with a lot of stuff you won’t use—making your own kits is your best bet. Read on and discover the stuff you really do need.

The Best Essential Kitchen Gear and Gadgets

Knives: Make your own set starting these three essential knives: an 8-inch chef's knife, a paring knife, and a serrated bread knife. Also useful: a great pair of kitchen shears, and a bench scraper for scooping up and transferring chopped food from the cutting board to a pot or pan.
