Easy Ways to Make Your Biscuits More Flavorful

Take plain buttermilk biscuits to the next level with these easy mix-and-match mix-ins.

Fluffy, tender buttermilk biscuits deserve a spot on everyone’s holiday table (or dinner table or breakfast table . . . it’s always a good time for biscuits!).

This kid-tested, kid-approved recipe, from The Complete Cookbook for Young Chefs, couldn’t be easier. It stars a stir-together batter and there’s no elaborate shaping involved. Kids just scoop and drop the batter right onto a parchment-lined rimmed baking sheet.

While you could make plain buttermilk biscuits, why would you when it takes hardly any time to add even more flavor?!

Dress up your biscuits by adding just about any flavorful stir-in along with the rest of your dry ingredients. Here are some guidelines for how much to use:

  • ¼ to ½ cup TOTAL of shredded, grated, or crumbled cheese; crumbled bacon; sliced scallions; chopped, toasted nuts; and/or dried fruit
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh herbs or ¾ teaspoon dried herbs
  • ½ to ¾ teaspoon ground spices

Let kids tap into their creativity and come up with their own flavor combinations or use one of the suggestions below.

  • Grated Pecorino or Parmesan cheese and black pepper
  • Shredded cheddar cheese and Old Bay seasoning
  • Dried cranberries, chopped walnuts, and chopped fresh sage
  • Crumbled feta cheese and sliced scallions
  • Crumbled cooked bacon and shredded cheddar cheese

These amped-up biscuits make a perfect savory side dish, or split them open and fill them with scrambled eggs for a special breakfast sandwich. The world is your oyster biscuit.
