How Prime Day Can Change Your Cooking

Not sure this month’s discount days are worth your time? Here’s why you might want to reconsider.

Amazon recently announced that there will be a second Prime Day this year—on October 10th and 11th.

Like you, we love a good deal, so we’ll approach the event like we always do: We’ll comb through the sales and put together a list of everything we’ve tested. Then we’ll put together an article outlining which of those items are worth your time and which ones to skip, and we’ll update that page regularly.

We know that these events can feel overwhelming. Some discounts are only available for a few hours. It can be a real slog to wade through everything on Amazon’s website. But we think that Prime Day is something avid cooks and anyone just trying to get dinner on the table should take advantage of. Here are three reasons why:

1. It’s a great time to buy that high-end thing you’ve been eyeing.

Odds are good there’s some piece of kitchen gear you want but haven’t been able to justify buying yet. Maybe you really want a gorgeous espresso machine that allows you to pull barista-quality shots. Or you watch lots of cooking shows and covet the high-powered blenders they use.

If you’re going to buy one of these top-tier items eventually, you might as well get it while it’s at a steep discount. During previous Prime Day sales, weve seen countertop appliances discounted by 20, 30 or even 40 percent.

Tip: In 2021, our favorite Vitamix blender was discounted by more than $250. We’ve also seen great deals on our much-loved nugget ice maker from GE and a set of top-rated All-Clad stainless-steel skillets

2. You can get a head start on holiday shopping.

The holidays will be here before you know it! Save yourself the headache of navigating a crowded mall in December or buying things online in a last-minute panic. Get the good stuff now.

If you know exactly who you’re shopping for and what they want, great! But if you haven’t had time to do that yet, focus on some crowd-pleasing themes. Shop for coffee makers or travel mugs for coffee lovers and stock up on good cake pans for the bakers in your life.

Tip: A great travel mug and the AeroPress both frequently appear among the Prime Day deals list and are great gifts under about $30. If it’s on sale again, our top-rated bread machine is the type of thing that busy bakers would love to have but would hesitate to buy for themselves.

3. You can upgrade the little things in your kitchen.

A bad vegetable peeler is worse than none at all. It works against you, bumping and bouncing along the curves of a potato or nicking tiny little strips off of a carrot. It’s annoying and it makes prepping dinner take five times longer than it needs to.

In your kitchen, maybe your peeler is fine but there’s a dull paring knife or a rusty can opener that slows you down. Instead of continuing to struggle with them, take the opportunity to upgrade them.

Tip: Our favorite citrus juicer has been priced at a steal in previous Prime Days. We’re also keeping an eye out for discounts on items such as our favorite cooling racks, winning vegetable peeler, and top-rated tongs.
