A spray mop won’t replace a regular mop for cleaning tough stains and large spaces, but the best spray mops are great for handling small spills, routine cleanings, and the messes of cooking and daily life. Our favorite model, the O-Cedar ProMist MAX Microfiber Spray Mop, has spacious, double-sided pads that are about twice as absorbent as any of the other pads we tested. It also has a comfortable handle and spraying trigger, so using it didn't tire us out. It’s lightweight but sturdy, and it performed impressively throughout our cleaning and durability tests.
What You Need to Know
If you’re looking to keep your floors sparkling but don’t have space to store a bulky mop and bucket set, a spray mop might be your best bet. Because they can't be wrung out, even the most capable spray mops can’t match the absorbency of our winning regular mops. But they still offer a portable and space-saving alternative that is great for handling touch-ups, smaller spills, moderate stains, and light routine cleaning. We think they’re perfect for apartment and dorm dwellers and others with less living and storage space.
Swiffer popularized automatic spray mops in the early 2000s, but most models today—including the majority of our lineup—are manually operated. Their trigger-style spraying levers are similar to those on spray bottles, and their attached refillable plastic bottles can be filled with any cleaning solution. Most have reusable microfiber pads that either slip over the heads or attach to the bottoms of the mops using Velcro-like strips.
We did test a Swiffer model, which was an outlier: It had a battery-powered spray mechanism that worked with the press of a button. It also employed single-use, disposable mopping pads.
What to Look For
- Large, Absorbent Microfiber Pads: The mops’ effectiveness came down to their pads. The best pads were made completely of microfiber, an ultra-absorbent fabric made of millions of microscopic polyester or nylon fibers. We preferred microfiber pads that were at least 15 inches wide, which helped cover more ground with each pass. Our favorite pads were also thick and double-sided, making them twice as absorbent as those of other models. Plushier pads also clung more effectively to dirt particles, grime, and pet hair.
- Machine-Washable Pads: Pads that could be cleaned in the washing machine were the most convenient. Our favorites emerged nearly dry from the washer and were ready for the next cleaning session after a brief air dry. A few models’ pads were also safe to dry in the dryer.
- Lightweight yet Sturdy Construction: Our favorite mops were light enough to easily...

We liked that this model was light enough to maneuver easily but heavy enough to assist with scrubbing. Its sprayer was the most powerful by far; it was capable of reaching three times as far as the other models, depending on how hard we pulled the trigger. Its head swiveled not only horizontally but also vertically, which allowed us to easily flip the double-sided mopping pad as we mopped. This meant we got double the scrubbing surface area, and the machine-washable pads were plush and twice as absorbent as those from the next best model we tested. They also clung to dirt particles better than other pads, though they required extra time to install since they slipped over the mop head rather than attaching to the bottom of it.

We liked this model’s long handle and moderate weight, which made it easy to maneuver. It had a spacious, comfortable grip and spray trigger that prevented us from tiring out too quickly as well as a fairly powerful spraying mechanism that covered a large area. It came with three reusable, machine-washable pads that clung to a substantial amount of dirt and grime. Unfortunately, the pads weren’t as absorbent as our winner’s.

This model had the most comfortable grip in the lineup, and it also included a handy secondary grip halfway down its handle. It arrived with a full bottle of cleaning solution that can be refilled with the cleaner of your choice. Its wide, spacious mopping pad clung fairly well to dirt particles and pet hair, but it wasn't as absorbent as the pads of the winner. We also wished it came with more than one pad, though you can buy other compatible pads separately. This mop’s weight tired us out after just a few minutes.

We liked how easy this model’s machine-washable pad was to install, and we were impressed by its comfortable grip and moderate, well-balanced weight. But its pad wasn’t very absorbent, and its spray trigger was short and uncomfortable to use. It was missing a secondary grip, and its spraying mechanism wasn’t powerful enough to cover a lot of ground. The mop head can be detached to reveal a small scrubbing pad at the end of the handle, but it frequently came apart accidentally during use.

This popular model was the only mop with a battery-operated spray mechanism and single-use mopping pads and cleaning solution bottles. We liked that we only had to press a button to spray solution and that the disposable pads were simple to install on the mop head. But the pads were the least absorbent in the lineup, so they quickly became saturated and needed replacing. They couldn’t handle much beyond small spills and stains. We also thought the grip was too small, which made maneuvering the mop with one hand difficult since it was the heaviest model in the lineup.

This mop felt flimsy in our hands and too lightweight for scrubbing up even the smallest stains. It seemed to glide over the floor rather than making thorough contact. Its grip and spray trigger were both too small, which made them uncomfortable to hold and operate. We appreciated that it came with three washable mop pads, but they weren’t very absorbent and didn’t do a good job of sopping up liquid.
