Put Leftover Panko to Use

If you happen to have a half-box of panko in your pantry, you can make seasoned bread crumbs that are much better than any store-bought product.

If you’ve tried store-bought seasoned bread crumbs, you know they are not worth the investment. However, if you happen to have a half-box of panko in your pantry, you can make seasoned bread crumbs that are much better than any store-bought product.

Mix 1 cup panko bread crumbs with 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper in 12-inch nonstick skillet to coat evenly. Cook mixture over medium heat, stirring frequently, until golden brown, about 4 minutes. Off heat, stir in 1 of the following: 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest; 1 teaspoon minced fresh thyme, rosemary, or oregano; or 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese. Transfer bread crumbs to rimmed baking sheet and let cool. Transfer to airtight container and store at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for up to 1 month.
