They’re a beautiful topping to dishes all over the world. They’re often that little pop of green on top of your food. Chefs sing their praises. What are we talking about? No, not sprinkles—it’s herbs, of course!
Herbs are plants—we usually use the leaves—that add flavor to foods and drinks. A lot of flavor. A sprinkling of herbs can add a ton of flavor because herbs are full of aroma compounds. That means they smell a lot—in a good way! Those aroma compounds make their way into your nose when you breathe, and your brain detects the flavor of the herbs. Without herbs, food would be, well, a lot less exciting.
