Gather Cooking Equipment

Butter knife
Small microwave-safe bowl and plate
Dry measuring cups
Rimmed baking sheet
Aluminum foil
Pastry brush
Oven mitts
Cooling rack

Prepare Ingredients

8 slices
hearty white or whole‑grain sandwich bread
3 tablespoons
unsalted butter, melted
1⅓ cups
shredded Monterey Jack cheese (6 ounces)

HEAT AND LINE: Adjust oven rack to lower-middle position and heat oven to 400 degrees. Line baking sheet with aluminum foil.

hearty white or whole-grain sandwich bread
3 tablespoons
unsalted butter, melted

BRUSH: Place 4 bread slices on baking sheet. Brush half of melted butter evenly over top of each slice. Flip bread slices, buttered side down.

shredded Monterey Jack cheese (6 ounces)
4 slices
hearty white or whole-grain sandwich bread

ASSEMBLE: Divide Monterey Jack evenly among bread slices. Place remaining 4 bread slices on top and press down gently. Brush tops with remaining melted butter.

BAKE: Bake until cheese is melted and bread is golden brown, 10 to 15 minutes. Place on cooling rack.
